Travel Makeup Bag Essentials: What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

When you’re packing for a trip, you might be tempted to bring your entire makeup collection with you. But that’s not only impractical, but also unnecessary. You can still look fabulous with a few carefully chosen items that will fit in your travel makeup bag. Here are some tips on what to bring and what to leave behind when you’re traveling.

What to Bring:

A versatile eyeshadow palette. Choose one that has a mix of matte and shimmer shades, and that can create both neutral and dramatic looks. You can use the eyeshadow as a liner, a highlighter, or even a brow filler if you need to.
A waterproof mascara. You never know when you might encounter rain, sweat, or tears on your trip, so having a mascara that won’t smudge or flake is essential. Plus, it will make your eyes pop in photos.
A tinted moisturizer or BB cream. These products are great for traveling because they provide light coverage, hydration, and sun protection in one. They also save space in your makeup bag and in your liquids bag for the airport.
A cream blush and lip tint. These products can multitask as well, giving you a natural flush on your cheeks and lips. They are easy to apply with your fingers, and they last longer than powder or lipstick.
A setting spray or powder. To make sure your makeup stays in place all day, you need to set it with either a spray or a powder. A spray will give you a dewy finish, while a powder will give you a matte finish. Choose one that suits your skin type and preference.

What to Leave Behind:

A foundation. Unless you have severe skin issues that need full coverage, you don’t need to bring a foundation on your trip. It will take up too much space in your makeup bag and in your liquids bag, and it might look cakey or unnatural in different lighting conditions.
A concealer. If you have a tinted moisturizer or BB cream that matches your skin tone well, you don’t need a separate concealer for your under-eye circles or blemishes. You can use the same product to spot conceal if needed.
A bronzer and a highlighter. These products are nice to have, but not essential for traveling. You can achieve a similar effect with your eyeshadow palette, by using the darker shades to contour and the lighter shades to highlight.
A lip liner and a lipstick. Unless you’re going for a very bold lip look, you don’t need to bring a lip liner and a lipstick on your trip. They will take up extra space in your makeup bag, and they might dry out or melt in different climates. A lip tint will give you enough color and moisture for your lips.
A primer and an eyelash curler. These products are also nice to have, but not essential for traveling. A primer might not make much difference if you’re using a tinted moisturizer or BB cream, and an eyelash curler might not be necessary if you’re using a waterproof mascara.

Traveling is a great opportunity to explore new places, meet new people, and have fun. But it doesn’t mean you have to compromise on your beauty routine. With these tips, you can pack smartly and efficiently for your trip, and still look amazing every day. Remember, less is more when it comes to travel makeup. Happy travels!
